How to attract and retain your blog visitors; the information age

We are in the information age; there is so much information online that it has become really hard to attract and retain the attention of your blog visitors. With tons of blogs, online news platforms, podcasts and audio books, eBooks, YouTube videos and of course social media, the average attention span of internet users has reportedly dropped from 12 secs to 8 secs and is steadily on the decline (drops by 88% every year).

These figures are everywhere on the internet and are claimed to have been published by Microsoft Corp and although this post debunks the claim, there is no denying the fact that there is so much to do online at any given time and so to keep your blog visitors engaged, you need to adopt certain tricks.

This post will outline how to attract and retain your blog visitors using 6 age-long tricks that are still very effective!

Always use headings

Ever wondered what a long Wikipedia article would look like without the headings? Horrible right? Headings are very important; they simplify your post by breaking it into smaller and easy to digest parts, keeping your blog visitors interested long enough to read through to the end.

Additionally, most blog visitors will generally browse through your post with attention to your headings to know what the post is about, if it is worth his/her time and if it is what he/she is looking for. So, always include bold headings in your posts.

Don’t forget bulleted/numbered lists

The following are the benefits of using bulleted/numbered lists in writing:

  • They make reading your posts a whole lot easier.
  • They make it very easy for site visitors to find important information.
  • They make writing a whole lot easier for you.
  • They help readers remember what they read.

If you don’t believe the above, below are the exact same points listed above, only this time, I didn’t organize them into a bulleted list, judge for yourself!

The following are the benefits of using bulleted/numbered lists in writing:

You would more easily remember the 4 points when outlined in bullet points than when they are jumbled together.

Remember to include images/graphics

A single image is worth a thousand words, tap into this power by including graphics such as charts, maps, images etc. to your blog posts because among other benefits, they:

  1. Make your post more interesting and less monotonous to your readers.
  2. Buttress your point.
  3. Help readers better understand your post for instance, including screenshots and illustrations in a how-to guide would help readers to better understand the guide.

Keep it as concise and straight to the point as possible

Always keep your posts as concise and straight-to-the-point as possible, beating around would only make your post unnecessarily long and cause your readers to quickly lose interest. They’ll end up looking for more concise alternatives that would give them the information they need.

Some blogs take it a step further by including excerpts that summarize the entire post in a few sentences. This is a strategy that is becoming increasingly important in this information age!

For longer posts, include a table of contents

Gone are the days of 5,000-word blog posts, if it however becomes absolutely necessary to do a very long post, you should also include a table of contents with links to the various parts of the post such that readers can easily navigate the post from the table of contents.

  • Including graphics (discussed above in point 3).
  • Including captivating stories your readers can relate to and
  • Adding the right amount of humor.
