ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF GOOGLE DATA HIGHLIGHTER
Advantages of Google Data Highlighter
Easy to use
Google Data Highlighter is way easier to use than the Schema alternative. It is perfect for you if you have little or no experience coding.
Saves you money
A continuation of the first point, if you have little or no coding experience, but you wish to mark up your site, you may need to hire a web developer to get this done. With Google Data Highlighter however, you can simply mark up your site by yourself.
Don’t have access to the website’s code, no problem…
Google Data Highlighter is the perfect tool to use if you don’t have access to the website’s code.
Quickest way to mark up your site contents
Data Highlighter from Google is the quickest way to mark up your site’s content. It allows you to markup your products, articles, events and other structured data types in a flash.
Disadvantages of Google Data Highlighter
Works only for Google
Perhaps the greatest demerit of this tool is that it works only for Google. Your site’s structured data markup can’t be picked up by other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, Yandex etc.
Only limited content types are currently supported
You can mark up only a limited type of content. These include: articles, book reviews, events, local businesses, movies, products, restaurants, TV episodes & software applications (see image above).
Might not work right away
From experience, the tool might return different errors before it works properly on your site. Some of these errors and possible solutions are listed here.
You’ll have to maintain your site’s structure
When you finally get the data highlighter to work properly on your site, you’ll need to maintain your site’s structure as any major changes you make to it might require that you start from scratch in marking up your content.
